This paper aims to investigate how different images around the body and sexual and gender relations were created in the context of the visual arts and how these images extrapolate the artistic field. The concept of image is explored here beyond its pictorial and visual sense, being understood as a symbolical repertoire that colonizes the social imaginary and exerts influence on social performance. The paper also intends to demonstrate how different artists create dissident images of the binary sex/gender system, creating bodies and practices that escape heteronormative images. In its conclusion, this paper makes a brief queer and feminist reading of art history and its images, showing how the production of images in art has the potential to oppose images of heteronormative and patriarchal discourse.
