Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) is a chronic endocrine-metabolic disease that has repercussions on the lives of children, adolescents and their families, causing practical changes in their routines. The objective was to understand the life experience of family members of children and adolescents with DM1, through an integrative review of national and international qualitative studies. Eleven databases were consulted, following the PRISMA-P protocol. 14 articles were selected for the review, according to the eligibility criteria. The results were organized and analyzed according to the psychosocial model of chronic diseases and the Family Life Cycle (FLC) theory in two thematic categories: Crisis phase and Chronic phase. Impacts were observed on the relational dynamics of different family members and subsystems, causing different emotional reactions and practical changes in the family's routine in the face of DM1. The importance of carrying out studies that visualize the life experience of different members that make up the family system of children/adolescents with DM1 is highlighted, in order to assist in promoting family health.
