About the Journal

Focus and scope

Revista de Ciências Sociais (RCS) of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) was created in 1970 translating the development of research and teaching activities of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy at that time.

The Journal, aimed at the academic public from all areas of the Social Sciences, aims to publish the results of empirical and theoretical research, as well as reviews of recent books on Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science in all its sub areas or methodological aspects. RCS is published on Open Access and does not charge authors any processing or submission fees.

RCS publishes at each issue a central thematic dossier and separate articles and reviews. The journal accepts unpublished article submissions or reviews that are not being evaluated for publication simultaneously in another journal and adopts a narrow definition of co-authoring.

Peer Review Process

The Revista de Ciências Sociais, an academic journal edited by the Department of Social Sciences of the Federal University of Ceará, published semiannually until 2017 (Jan-Jun / Jul-Dec) and quarterly (Mar-Jun / Jul-Oct / Nov-Feb) since 2018, invites the submission of articles, essays, reviews and proposals of thematic dossiers.

Manuscripts are submitted to a first evaluation by the Editorial Board to verify their adequacy to the journal’s scope. Submissions deemed to comply with RCS’s editorial line will be submitted for double-blind review by external peers chosen in accordance with proven knowledge in the article’s area. Manuscripts may be evaluated as approved for direct publication; approved with minor corrections; revise & resubmit for further evaluation or rejection. Click here to view the evaluation model provided to anonymous reviewers. Cases of disagreement between referees will be arbitrated by the Editorial Board and new opinions may be requested. See the Authors Guidelines for more information and click here to begin the submission procedure.

It is important to note that submissions of articles written by more than one author must comply with the co-authoring criteria adopted by the journal and send, as an attachment, a statement attesting the compliance according to the following model.

Articles that perform statistical or qualitative tests should send the databases and scripts used as Supplementary Documents along with the manuscript, or otherwise make it available to allow replication by peer reviewers.

Book Reviews should deal with recent works, the publication of which does not exceed the last 5 years.

RCS adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Principles of Ethics in Scientific Research - http://www.publicationethics.org

Periodicity

Originally a six-monthly publication between 1970 and 2017, RCS is published every four months since 2018, with the 1st Number  referring to the months from March to June; the 2nd to the months of July to October; and the 3rd to the months of November to February, the magazine being published on the first day of the beginning month of each respective period.

Open Access Policy

RCS is published on Open Access and does not charge authors any processing or submission fees. This journal offers immediate free access to its content, following the principle that making the scientific knowledge available to the public free of charge provides a greater worldwide democratization of knowledge.

Research and Publication Ethics and Anti-Plagiarism Policy

Revista de Ciências Sociais (RCS) guides its work on the belief that good scientific practice is based on ethical precepts and norms of conduct aimed at transparency and integrity of the results achieved as a way to better advance and publicly socialize the scientific knowledge generated.

Because it is concerned with Integrity in Research, Ethics in Science, and Publications, RCS recommends authors, reviewers, and editors of dossiers to read the following basic documents and guidelines to which we subscribe:

a) the Singapore Declaration on Research Integrity, 2010, http://www.singaporestatement.org/translations.html;

b) the CNPq Research Integrity Directives, 2011 http://cnpq.br/dirturas;

c) FAPESP Code of Good Research Practice, 2014 http://www.fapesp.br/boaspraticas/;

d) Brazilian National Health Council Resolution No. 510 of April 7, 2016 - Provides for the standards applicable to research in Humanities and Social Sciences (http://conselho.saude.gov.br/resolucoes/2016/Reso510). pdf)

e) the document on Cooperation between Research Institutions and Journals on Research Integrity Cases: Guidance from the [International] Committee on Publication Ethics - COPE (http://publicationethics.org/);

Furthermore, we believe that practicing plagiarism or self-plagiarism in all its forms is inadmissible. Authors must guarantee the originality of the manuscripts and when using articles or sources by other authors, they must be cited. Suspicious cases may be subject to verification by anti-plagiarism software and it is possible that the authors may receive inquiries regarding possible red-flags by the software used during the evaluation process. In case of proven plagiarism, the manuscripts will be returned to the authors.

 Finally, we have adopted a restricted definition of co-authoring and manuscripts with more than one author must submit to the Co-authoring Definition and submit the Declaration required below.

Definition of Co-authorship

When submitting manuscripts with more than one author, the RCS Editorial Committee must be informed about the specific contribution of each author in the different stages of their preparation.

We understand that co-authorship should only be given to those who have made significant intellectual contributions to research and writing. Following good social science practice, only those who have made a substantial and direct academic contribution to at least two of the typical research components are accepted by the journal as co-authors:

(a) conception and design;

(b) data collection and processing;

c) Analysis and interpretation of data.

In addition, it is considered essential that each co-author has participated directly in the writing of parts of the text.

Each person listed as an author must, in addition, have read the successive versions of the text and approve the final version, thus being ethically and academically responsible for the full content for all intents and purposes.

Declaration of Co-authorship Model (REQUIRED FOR TEXTS WITH MORE THAN ONE AUTHOR)

For the submission of manuscripts with more than one author, each participant must fill in a statement containing:

a) Identification of the text: Title of the text; names of co-authors;

b) Identification of the co-author: Name, nationality, identity document, full address;

c) Description of the specific participation in:

1) conception and design of research;

2) data collection and processing;

3) analysis and interpretation of data;

4) details of the collaboration in the preparation of the final text;

d) Declaration that approves the final version and assumes the ethical and academic co-responsibility for the completeness of the content.

f) Place, date and signature.

This document should be attached, in PDF format, as a supplementary document, leaving unchecked the option “Enable document for evaluators”.

The RCS Editorial Commission reserves the right to accept or not the declaration of co-authorship of the respective participants thus declared.
