      Abstract

      This study carried out because of the economic importance of the flying fish, Hirundichthys affinis Gunther, 1866 in the fish production of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The data for analysis consisted of 378 individuals caught on the Caiçara do Norte oecanic region, in the period from April, 1999 through April, 2000. The macroscopic characterization of sexual maturity was carried out by means of histological analysis, which allowed the identification of the following stages – females: immature, maturing I and II, spawning and spent; males: immature, maturing, spawning and spent. The microscopic examination of the oocytes confirmed the ovarian maturity stages. Mature males and females were abundant during the months of May and June, which indicate the spawning period of the species.
