          Abstract

To determine the effect of starvation on the oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion of postlarvae and juveniles of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804)) a continuas sea water circulation system comprised of six individual chambers was used in a bioessay. To evaluate the oxigen consumption and ammonia excretion, disolved oxygen (0) and ammonia (NH/)concentration data were compared from water samples collected in and out of each chambers. Salinity and
disolved oxygen of the circulating water was 35.5 ± 0.79 %o and 6.21 ± 0.16 mg/1, respectively. The experimental animais were submited to two treatments: l)control - in which the animais were fed with the intertidal molusc Littorina mespilum; 2) the animais were atarved for seven days after aquarium acclimation. Results indicated no difference (P>0.05) in oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion, for the experimental conditions used.
