Abstract

The novel O Mulato, by Aluísio Azevedo, is published in 1881, presenting a very unfavorable image of the province of Maranhão of that time.
The present article analyzes how a specific conception of time is constructed throughout the narrative and mobilized in a critique of
certain sectors of Maranhão society.
