Abstract

This article intends to discuss the role of education in the backlands of Rio Grande do Norte in the first half of the twentieth century as a means capable of promoting otherness to the social actors who could seize knowledge through the progressive and civilizing discourse that emerged Brazil in the first decades of the republican period. For this, education is seen as a dynamic element for the man of the backlands who from knowledge can appropriate dynamically the space in which he lives. To reach our goal, we used the newspapers: The Moment written by the scholar José de Azevêdo Dantas in the period between 1910 - 1920
and articles of the newspaper O Povo written by Manoel Dantas in the year 1889
