Abstract

The caricatures are one of the most popular forms of visual communication in contemporary times. From the writings of Charles Baudelaire in the nineteenth century to the last decades, with the most recent works of the new Cultural History, scholars have been examining the caricatures, reflecting the extent to which these images reproduce the imaginaries and mentalities of subjects and social groups. Based on some of these studies, the present work has two purposes. The first is to think about the historicity of caricatures, their uses and political and social appropriations. The second is to map the main challenges that this type of
language offers historians. We hope to provide an overview of the methodological discussions that have been made about this imaging format in the humanities.
