Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the political intervention of Friar Timótheo Pimentel in the period of the Restoration War, especially with his work Exhortação militar ou lança de Aquiles aos soldados portugueses pela defensão de seu Rei, reino e pátria em o presente apresto de guerra, dated from 1650. It is desired to reflect, through his writing, his role as a religious partisan of the government of Restored Portugal and the relationship he sought to have with the Portuguese populations amid the conflict of the lusitanian kingdom with the Catholic Monarchy. The development of this analysis will be based on various contributions of historiography on the capacity of communication and political engagement in the Modern Period of the various social sectors, caused by the reading and understanding of texts of the most diverse types. Noteworthy are the works of Rita Marquilhas, António Castillo Gómez, Massimo Rospocher, Filippo de Vivo and Jason Peacey for the characterization of a urban environment, politicized and communicative of European societies in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
