The purpose of this article is to discuss the concept of religion and religiosity in Portuguese America, as well as to analyze these two aspects used in the society of the seridões of Seridó, in the first half of the 20th century, under the view of the scholar José de Azevêdo Dantas. To this end, we will use the newspaper O Raio written by José de Azevêdo and a bibliographic review that deals with the theme of religion and religiosity. We can see that the social actors in the seridões of Seridó are inserted both in the logic of religiosity and in the religious aspect. In this way, we can verify that his religion goes beyond the purely sacred character and enters the space of the profane, in which there is an overlap of religiosity.
