Abstract

The article aims to discuss the performance of Catholic religious in the Pernambuco invade by the West Indische Compagnie, between the years 1635-1646. To this end, we appropriate the trajectory of the regular clergyman of the Order of St. Paul, Fr. Manuel Calado do Salvador during three phases of events: resistance, Dutch rule and restoration. Seeking identify both their participation in the conflicts, as well as the realization of the ceremonies and rites of the Roman Church in the midst of the chaotic scenario of war. Your relationship with administrative agents of both parties and possible interests at stake, with the decision to remain in that space, before the defendants that were made as soon as the invaders conquered the main villages of that captaincy. It is known that during the event many religious picked up and encouraged soldiers and people to take up arms, others were chaplains of regiments, or assisted in the supply of troops, providing assistance to the wounded and homeless, but also had those who were intermediaries and spies. Even with a restriction of worship, many clerics continued to meet the spiritual needs of the Catholic population who had remained there, confessing, baptizing, marrying, preaching, performing burials and celebrations of the ecclesiastical calendar. These actions demonstrate how rich can this field be still little explored by the historiography that focuses on this period.
