This article is a discussion essay regarding the fragility of memory and cultural identity as a result of the invisibility of local cultural heritage and its historical narratives in the municipality of Itapiúna. strengthening this debate, some sources will be used, such as the federal constitutions of 1937 and 1988, the prerogative guided by ordinance No. 137/2016 created by IPHAN, the Cultural Heritage Application Manual: participatory inventories (2016) and the Tourist Guide material Cultural do Ceará (2021) which recognizes the historical nature and tourist potential of Ceará’s municipalities. and some theorists, Simone Scifoni with “Heritage and Education in Brazil: what’s new?” and Laurajane Smith with “Challenging Authorized Heritage Discourse.” These will be fundamental elements for the theoretical construction discussed in this article, as it will discuss the recognition and construction of historical, symbolic and affective knowledge of the communities that make up the municipality's population. To this end, the territory will be analyzed through the city's cultural and natural assets and the historical and symbolic perspective they list, addressing the issues involving the relationship between society and heritage in the territory of Itapiúna, and how these impact on local cultural identity.
