Abstract

Abstract

In this essay, through the analysis of The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (2021), a novel by José Saramago published in 1991, we seek to understand the strategies used to question the whole biblical narrative based on the story of Jesus Christ's crucifixion: from the blaming God for the death of his only son, to the victimization of Jesus and the possible love relationship of the protagonist of the narrative with Mary of Magdala, in a context that she represents the subversion of the canons of the Sacred Scripture, by being the instructor of the sexual initiation of Jesus Christ. Through theoretical clippings of the concepts of postmodernism, villanization, victimization, subversion, duly substantiated by Carlos Reis (2015), Ana Paula Arnaut (2002), Cristina da Costa Vieira (2008), Marcio Cappelli (2019), Jean-François Lyotarde (1989) among others, the present article intends to analyze to what extent José Saramago, subverting the status quo, proposes an alternative to the historical interpretation of the Judeo-Christian creed.
