        Abstract

The occurence and distribution of seaweeds were studied at seven sites along the coast of Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. The studied beach areas were as follows: I - Goiabeiras; li - Pirambu; III - Diários; IV - Meireles; V - Farol; VI - Caça e Pesca and VII- Sabiaguaba. A total of 196 seaweed species were identified: 30 Chlorophyceae, 23 Phaeophyceae, 141 Rhodophyceae and 2 Cyanophyceae. The Farol station stands out with 180 taxa. Some species are common to all sites, while others are restricted to only one. A Cheney index rate of 8.03 indicates a strong tropical affinity. A total of 90.47% of the sites exhibited similarity of seaweed species greater than 50%, implying a relatively homogeneous alga!
        distribution.
