Abstract

The seaweed Sargassum vulgare is a species of recognized ecological importance in marine environments, with its stem being amenable to colonization by several groups of organisms. This study describes the species composition of epiphytic macroalgae on Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh (Ochrophyta: Fucales) from a population of the Coqueiro Beach, Piauí State. Sixty adults of S. vulgare were collected randomly between December, 2009 and September, 2010. Eighteen species of epiphytic macroalgae were identified, five of them belonging to phylum Chlorophyta and thirteen to phylum Rhodophyta, but with no species of the class Phaeophyceae being found. The highest number of epiphytic species belonged to the order Ceramiales, and the filamentous morphofunctional type was most representative in terms of species diversity.
