The Abbreviated Mission of Father Couto (1859) in the plots of enchanted Juazeiro

Abstract

The article intends to analyse of the circulation and reading of "Abbreviated Mission" (Portugal, 1859) in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, and reflect on how this breviary interpretations is related to the "plots of the sacred" that surround this city’s history. We will  take as main source, the narratives presented by the Public Pilgrims Penitents, members of a brotherhood , whose doctrinal foundation is anchored in both the Abbreviated Mission teachings as well as the lay Catholic experience  in . We  also intend in this article to highlight the "fragments of the past" that constitute an imbricated relation between this publication temporalities and the readers who interpreted them. From this comparison , it becomes possible to see how this book’s history, the readers of it, and the listening and reading dimensions can contribute to a historical interpretation that reveals the everyday plots and their involvement in the great power structures.
