Pecém: from local to global

Abstract

Choosing Pecém (district of São Gonçalo do Amarante – CE - Brazil) as the headquarters of the Industrial and Port Complex of Pecém (CIPP), the socio-spatial dynamics of a place that used to be home to fishing, subsistence agriculture and vacation dwellings became radically changed. This work seeks to expose the relations between Pecém and the global and regional scenarios, more specifically on the economic perspective, highlighting the territorial dynamics at the local scale. To achieve that, are made literature review about the context that led to the CIPP's implementation; data collection in electronic newspapers, official publications and academic papers on its relevance in a multi and interscalar perspective; and interviews with complex staff. In the end, we realize that local particularities still resist, despite the strong overlap of global flows and dynamics over the place.
