Abstract

The municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes has 90.29% of the population residing in urban areas. In this context, urban gardens are interventions that mitigate some of the negative effects of this high rate of urbanization. The objective of this work was to characterize the community's urban vegetable gardens in the city and the profile of their horticulturists, in order to obtain data that allow the direction of public policies. Data were obtained from twelve community gardens registered at the city hall, through semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation. The results indicate that the activity has a great impact on the income of urban farmers. Urban gardens are crucial for the maintenance of families linked to them and an important intervention that allows income generation for people in conditions of social vulnerability.
