Abstract

This study seeks to reveal the socio-spatial inequalities present in neighborhoods in the southern region of the urban area of Santa Maria, a medium-sized city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. For this purpose, a literature review of urban legislation was used, in addition to data collection in field. The reality observed in the South region is the densification of the uses of the territory, through the implementation of commercial enterprises, such as the Praça Nova shopping mall, the closed condominiums “Parque das Oliveiras” and “Morada do Lago”, in addition to the private club Dores Praia Park. All of these new uses, imposed as verticalities in the neighborhoods of the southern part, appear as an indicator of the expansion process to the south of the urban area of Santa Maria, introducing a new territorial and demographic logic in the city, historically characterized by the East-West expansion.
