Abstract

This study aimed to characterize the environmental perception of tourists on a beach located in the Piaçabuçu Environmental Protection Area, created with the aim of protecting sea turtles and migratory birds, in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. The site stands out for being one of the most relevant feeding and breeding areas for sea turtles on the Brazilian coast. 352 questionnaires were applied to tourists, vacationers and excursionists. When asked if their stay caused environmental damage, male participants with a higher level of education perceived better the environmental changes caused by tourist activities. Therefore, it was found that among the analyzed variables, length of stay, gender and education level were significant, directly influencing the perception of tourists from the Pontal do Peba/AL beach.
