TRENDS AND EXTREME EVENTS IN AIR TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION IN GOIÁS, BRAZIL

Abstract

Climate change is unequivocal, widespread, accelerating, irreversible and without historical precedent, with extreme climatic events recorded in all regions of the planet, causing adverse impacts in the environmental, economic and social spheres.  The aim of this research was to detect climate change trends and identify extreme events and in the state of Goiás, using air temperature and rainfall data from a 45-year time series (1980 to 2024) recorded by seven conventional weather stations of the National Meteorological Institute, located in Goiânia, Jataí, Pirenópolis, Aragarças, Formosa, Posse and Ipameri. To this end, indices developed by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection, Monitoring and Indices (ETCCDMI), linked to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), were used. Seventeen indices were calculated with the R software, using the Rclimdex extension. For the precipitation-related indices, the data show a negative trend with high statistical significance in only a few stations. In the case of the temperature-related indices, there is a positive trend with high statistical significance at all the stations analyzed, which shows an increase in maximum and minimum temperatures over the time series analyzed.

    Holds a degree in Ecology and Environmental Analysis from the Federal University of Goiás (2021). Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Geography through the Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Goiás. Has experience in the fields of Ecology and Climatology.

  • Diego Tarley Ferreira Nascimento, Federal University of Goiás

    He holds a Bachelor's degree (2009), a Master's degree (2011), and a Doctorate (2016) in Geography from the Federal University of Goiás. He has professional experience as an environmental consultant and higher education lecturer, having worked as a geoprocessing consultant for Petrobras and Furnas Centrais Elétricas, and as a lecturer at the Catholic College of Anápolis, the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás (PUC Goiás), and the State University of Goiás (UEG – Iporá Campus). He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Federal University of Goiás, working in the fields of Physical Geography and Geomatics, with an emphasis on Cartography, Geoprocessing, Remote Sensing, and Climatology. He is also a permanent faculty member of the Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Goiás (Master's and Doctoral levels) and a collaborating faculty member of the Graduate Program in Geography at the State University of Goiás – Cora Coralina Campus (Master's level). He holds a Research Productivity Fellowship from CNPq (PQ-2). He is a member of the International Association for Urban Climate, the Goiás Climate Change Forum, and the Climate Change and Landscape Ecology (CCLE) research group at the University of Barcelona.
