GEOTECHNOLOGIES APPLIED TO THE BEHAVIORAL STUDY OF URBAN HEAT ISLANDS

Abstract

Many cities are impacted by the effect of heat islands. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of urban heat islands and the influence of green areas on the formation of urban microclimates in the city of Rio de Janeiro. As a result, it was observed that Rio de Janeiro city is under heat islands influence, in which the oldest and most urbanized areas of the city are the most affected by high temperatures. It was possible to verify the role of vegetation in the formation of urban microclimates through the negative correlation coefficient between surface temperature (Ts) and vegetation indexes (NDVI and EVI), along with the positive correlation coefficient between surface temperature (Ts) and the Index of Areas Built by Normalized Difference (NDBI), what demonstrates the influence of urbanization on the increase of temperature.

    Full Professor at UFES and long-term CNPq scholarship holder in Research Productivity - PQ, level 1D (Term: 03/01/2020 to 02/28/2024 - 48 months). He has a degree in Agronomy from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (1997) and a degree in Literature - Portuguese and English from the University of Franca (UNIFRAN) (2018). Specialization in Portuguese and English Language Teaching Methodology from Candido Mendes University (UCAM) (2016), Master's degree in Agricultural Meteorology from the Federal University of Viçosa (1999), PhD in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal University of Viçosa (2001) and Post-doctorate in Forestry Sciences from the Federal University of Viçosa (2016). He is currently a full professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, working professionally in the Department of Rural Engineering (ERU-UFES) and Postgraduate Program in Forestry Sciences at UFES (PPGCF-UFES) and Postgraduate Program in Forestry Science at UFV (PPGCF-UFV) as a permanent professor of Master's and Doctorate degrees. He has experience in the areas of Geotechnologies, Agronomy, Geometeorology, Agrometeorology, Geotechnologies Applied to the Environment and Health, Portuguese and English Language Teaching Methodology and Literature. He works mainly on the following topics: Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Meteorology, Climatology, Global Climate Change. She is a professor at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo, working in the areas of Environmental Climatology and Meteorology, Forestry, Recovery of Degraded Areas, Ecology and Plant Physiology.

    PhD in Environmental Sciences (2010). Associate Professor III of the Nature Conservation area of the Department of Forestry and Wood Sciences (DCFM) and Forest Ecology of the Postgraduate Program in Forestry Sciences (PPGCFL), of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). He has experience in the area of Forest Resources and Forest Engineering, working mainly in the CNPq sub-area of Nature Conservation. He develops research and guides students in Forest Ecology, Floristics and Phytosociology of Plant Communities of the Atlantic Forest sensu lato and Conservation of Wild Areas. He participates in international cooperation with the University of Mayne (USA), University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (Portugal) and the Agricultural Research Institute of Mozambique. It has cooperation with different Brazilian institutions (UFJF, UFSBA, JBRJ, INMA, IFES). Teaches the subjects Forest Ecology, Conservation Units, Environment and Sustainable Development for the undergraduate degree in Forestry Engineering (DCFM) and Tropical Forest Ecology for the postgraduate degree (PPGCFL). He has supervised and co-supervised undergraduate, master's and doctorate students at DCFM/PPGCFL/UFES. He was Coordinator of Recovery of Degraded Areas at CEPENE / IBAMA between 2007 and 2010. He worked as a professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo in the disciplines of Basic Statistics and Biostatistics (2015).
