Abstract

The Olympic Games allow for rapid urban transformations in the host city due to the significant investments available from public and private sources. In addition to plans for the event, some host cities also propose planning guidelines in order to redirect their urban dynamics. Beijing was the city that invested the most in infrastructure, in order to reduce the monocentric growth process. The general objective was to verify if the physical configuration of the city changed with the master plan carried out for the event. Due to the difficulty in obtaining official data, an indirect methodological analysis was proposed by verifying temporal alterations in constructed housing density. Despite the enduring strong attractiveness of the historic center, it was possible to perceive the consolidation of the centralities to the east, in accordance with the plan.

Keywords: Urban plans; Major sporting events; Olympic legacy.
