NATAL, VILA OR CIDADE?

Abstract

In the studies that deal with the history of the city of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, there are contradictory assertions about the urban status it received when it was founded in 1599. For some authors, it emerged as a vila (village); for others, as a cidade (city), two categories of urban settlements included in the Portuguese urban terminology of that period. In this work, we show that it is possible to decide clearly in favor of one of these assertions based upon the analysis of a series of historiographic and documentary evidences and other considerations.

    Doutor em Etudes Urbaines - Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (2002), Paris, França. Pós-doutoramento no CRHIA, Universidade de La Rochelle, França (2012-2013). Entre outros cargos administrativos, foi Coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFRN - PPGAU/UFRN, de abril de 2008 a março de 2010 , e de maio de 2014 a abril de 2016. Professor visitante na EHESS, Paris, e na Université de La Rochelle, França, em janeiro de 2011. Atualmente, é professor associado da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. No universo da Arquitetura e Urbanismo, atua principalmente nas áreas de História da Arquitetura e Urbanismo, Projeto e Habitação. Tem diversos trabalhos publicados, livros, capítulos de livros, artigos, resumos, resenhas e outros, publicados no Brasil e no exterior.
