LANDSLIDES IN THE STATE OF PERNAMBUCO

Abstract

Even though the occurrences of social and economic losses and fatal victims caused by landslides in Pernambuco are recurrent, one must consider that there is a gap in the systematization of information pertaining to such processes in a georeferenced spatial database at a state level, especially with regard to the location and types of triggering conditioning factors. This work is intended to evaluate the occurrence of landslides in the state of Pernambuco, the conditioning factors thereof, and the most affected areas. For such, a Geographic Database (Banco de Dados Geográfico - BDG) and an inventory map were created, based on the capture of landslides in the state between 1988 and 2019, both through secondary and primary sources. Lastly, all of the occurrences were catalogued in information plans, vectorized in a GIS (Geographic Information System) environment and correlated with thematic variables of the main conditioning factors. 3,138 landslides in Pernambuco were inventoried, which enabled the verification of behavior patterns regarding the occurrence of said processes in the state. The formation of this georeferenced spatial database may contribute to better understand the incidence of these processes, and thus subsidize the establishment of investigative methodologies and strategies related to the subject.

    PhD in Physical Geography from the University of São Paulo (USP). Professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), working in the Department of Geographical Sciences. At graduation, he is responsible for disciplines in the area of Geotechnology. Permanent member of the Graduate Program in Geography (PPGEO) and the Graduate Program in Geodetic Sciences and Geoinformation Technologies (PPGCGTG/Department of Cartographic Engineering and Surveying) of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). He is coordinator of the ENPLAGEO Research Group (Research Group on Geotechnologies Applied to Geomorphology of Slopes and Plains) and of the Laboratory of Geomorphology and Geotechnologies (GEOTEC) of the Department of Geographical Sciences at UFPE. He was a member of the Council of the Brazilian Geomorphology Union (Management 2017-2020). Deputy leader of the Geomorphological and Quaternary Continental Mapping Research Group - GEODEQC (UFPE). He is a Tutor for the Jr. Company. MapGeo: Mapping and Geographical Solutions together with the Department of Geographical Sciences at UFPE. He has experience in Geosciences, with an emphasis on Geomorphology and Geotechnologies applied to Geography, working mainly on the following topics: surface dynamic processes in humid and semi-arid tropical environments; risk cartography; geoprocessing, mathematical forecasting models and natural disasters. In 2013 he received the Young Geomorphologists award during the 8th International Conference on Geomorphology held in Paris by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG). Since 2019, he has been the sectoral extension coordinator of the Department of Geographical Sciences at UFPE and, since 2021, deputy extension coordinator of the Center for Philosophy and Human Sciences at UFPE.
