IDENTIFYING CENTERS AND SUBCENTERS IN THE METROPOLITAN REGION OF BELO HORIZONTE THROUGH GOOGLE PLACES OF INTEREST

Abstract

This research provides novel exploration of the distribution of urban facilities in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, to identify primary and secondary centralities. The main findings are based on a Kernel Density, using Google Places of Interest data. Primary and secondary metropolitan centers are detected in the largest municipalities in the Metropolitan Area, as well as smaller suburban subcenters in peripheral municipalities. Moreover, the analysis of five categories of facilities illustrates different centralities structures and inequalities in the distribution of different types of activities.

  • Eugênia Viana Cerqueira, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Pampulha (MG), Brazil.

    PhD in Urbanism and Planning from the Université Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and have as main research focuses the dynamics of metropolisation, urban expansion, mobility and socio-spatial segregation. She lectured from 2015 to 2019 at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, in Urbanism and Geography courses. She received the best prize from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and also from the UFMG in 2019. She was a finalist for the best prize from the Comité National Français de Géographie. She completed a post-doctorate at the Université de Bourgogne in 2019 where she worked on the research project "Quand les temps du travail bosculent la mobilité quotidienne". Currently she is a substitute professor at the Institute of Geosciences of UFMG and post-doctoral student in the Post-graduation Program in Geography-Spatial Information Treatment at PUC-Minas.

  • Alexandre Magno Alves Diniz, Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte (MG), Brazil.

    PhD in Geography - Arizona State University (USA) and Post-Doctorate in Geography - McGill University (Canada). He was a visiting scholar at the Université de Lille (France), Curtin (Australia) and Texas State University (USA). He is currently adjunct professor IV of the Post-Graduation Program in Geography of PUCMinas. He has experience in the area of Human Geography, working mainly on the following topics: Geography of Crime and Violence, Urban Geography and Regional Geography. He coordinated the Post-Graduation Program in Geography of PUC Minas between 2009 and 2016. CNPq Productivity Grantee. Mineiro Researcher - FAPEMIG. Member of the Geographical Assessment Commission at CAPES in the quadriennial period 2013-2016 and 2017-2020. He coordinated with Jupira Mendonça the RMBH nucleus of the Metropolis Observatory between 2015 and 2017. Member of the Câmara de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas (CSA) of FAPEMIG. Research Coordinator of PUC Minas.
