HISTORICAL SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN SALVADOR AND BAHIA IN THE LONG DURATION

Abstract

The text deals with the social movements that took place in Salvador and in the captaincy/province/state of Bahia, in the long duration from 1500/1549 to the present day, based on the results of research carried out for my book Salvador: transformações e permanências and other materials most recent. The text is divided into four parts. Initially, a review was carried out on the literature of social movements in sociology and geography. Then, in view of the long duration, social movements in Salvador were divided into Colony, Empire and Republic. The notion of social movements was used in that book as one of the transforming agents of the city.

Author Biography

  • Pedro de Almeida Vasconcelos, Federal University of Bahia, Salvador (BA), Brazil

    Ph.D in Geography - University of Ottawa (1985) and post-doctorate at Université de Paris IV - Sorbonne (1994-1995). Full Professor in Geography at the Federal University of Bahia, gazetted (1986). He is currently a permanent professor at the Catholic University of Salvador, working in the Postgraduate Program in Territorial Planning and Social Development, and a permanent professor in the Postgraduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Bahia. He was guest lecturer at the Institut d'Urbanisme de Paris (1988), the University of Barcelona (2001) and the Université de Paris 8 (2004). He was a member of the Capes Advisory Committee (Geography, 1999-2002) and representative of Human Geography on the CNPq Advisory Committee (2002-2005). He is a CNPq 1-A researcher. He works in the area of Historical Geography, Urban Geography and Urbanism, mainly on the following topics: theories about cities; Salvador, informal work.
