The ability of silicon to mitigate saline stress during the growth and development of mungo beans (Vigna radiata L.)

Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) is a species that is tolerant to water deficit. However, a decline in its productivity may occur depending on the intensity of salinity stress. Irrigation with low-quality water containing dissolved salts can cause physiological damage to plants. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of seed treatment with silicon as a promising approach for mitigating the adverse effects of saline irrigation water on crops. Five saline water concentrations were used for irrigation: 0.0 dS m⁻¹, 1.5 dS m⁻¹, 3.0 dS m⁻¹, 4.5 dS m⁻¹, and 6.0 dS m⁻¹. Plants with (Si+) and without (Si-) silicon treatment were irrigated at 10, 20, and 30 days after emergence. The analyzed variables included absolute and relative growth rates in terms of shoot height, SPAD index, shoot and root dry mass, shoot and root length, stem diameter, number of pods, number of seeds per pod, and overall yield. The results revealed that irrigation with non-saline water yielded the best outcomes, whereas increased salinity negatively affected the measured variables. Compared with the absence of Si, Si treatment was an effective strategy for mitigating salinity stress, particularly at relatively high salinity levels (4.5 and 6.0 dS m⁻¹); improved stem diameter, shoot and root length, shoot dry mass, and absolute growth rate; and enhanced plant performance. In conclusion, Si application is a practical and effective approach to alleviate the detrimental effects of salinity stress, contributing to improved plant growth and productivity under saline stress conditions.
