Piper tuberculatum Jacq. (Piperaceae) extract activity on Spodoptera frugiperda(J. E. Smith)

Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate in laboratory conditions the insecticidal potential of the aqueous extract of fresh fruit dehydrated of Piper tuberculatum on Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Leaves of corn cut into circles with an area of 7.06 cm2 and 2.5 cm in diameter were immersed in different concentrations of the extract and offered daily to caterpillars. The completely randomized design was used with eleven treatments and five replications with seven caterpillars per plot. The variables were: mortality, consumption and larval duration. Data were submitted to the analysis of variance by the F test and averages compared by the Tukey test at 5% of probability. The results indicated that the extract affected the caterpillars, reduced leaf consumption and lengthened larval period of the insects.
