Abstract

The conversion of natural vegetation into forest plantations, even with native species, can modify soil properties; therefore, its evaluation is significant for adopting appropriate management practices. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the physical attributes of the soil in the native forest (NF) areas and Brazil nut plantations, aged 3 years (CA3) and 25 years (CA25), located in the municipality of Itacoatiara, Amazonas. In each area, we delimited one grid of 70 m x 70 m with 10 m spacing between points, totaling 64 sample points. We then collected soil samples at layers of 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, and 40-60 cm to determine granulometric, macro, micro and total porosity analysis, bulk density, soil penetration resistance, and aggregate stability. After the physical analysis, we assessed the obtained data using descriptive and multivariate statistics. The history of grazing observed in CA3 influenced soil compaction in the top 20 cm of soil. The NF environment presented the best physical conditions for mechanical penetration resistance and porosity. On the other hand, CA25 was an intermediate environment, exhibiting better conditions of bulk density and soil aggregation. Based on the principal component analysis, soil aggregation and porosity were the key attributes to discern the 3-year-old Brazil nut plantation (CA3) from the other areas in the topsoil layer.
