Abstract

This article compares the accounts of the historical process proposed by Vico and Hegel. They both share the vision that human beings are subjects of history and that there is a unity in the unfolding of history. It will be claimed, nonetheless, that whereas Vico thinks history as a process of progressive humanization that can be understood with the help of philology, Hegel believes it to be the place where the contradiction of the dialectical process progressively manifests reason and asserts freedom.
