Este artigo ressalta a importância do pensamento do filósofo Jean-Jacques Rousseau, no contrafluxo do pensamento iluminista de sua época, provocando uma profunda ruptura na estética musical da tradição – do pitagorismo-platônico ao racionalismo moderno – sobretudo em duas questões básicas que se articulam entre si: a dicotomia entre razão e sensibilidade e a ausência de semanticidade na arte musical, o que irá estabelecer um profundo diálogo com o pensamento filosófico do século XIX, abrindo caminho para a estética musical do romantismo.
