Abstract

A small-scale shrimp fishery was described as to fishing fleet, exploitation area, fishing gear (otter trawl), and cost and revenue of this activity carried out on the coastal zone of Fortaleza county (Ceará State, Brazil), based on landings made during 381 days, from July, 1997 through June, 1998. The main results of this study are: (1) the majority of small-sized boats of the fishing fleet do not operate exclusively on the shrimp fishery, taking part of it primarily during the low season of fish production and the closed-season for spiny lobsters; (2) the economic analysis showed that the shrimp fishery is an activity with lowprofit and high-revenue distribution, but yielding a wide range of direct and indirect job opportunities; (3) studies on the specific shrimp production and its by-catch require a scientific assessment.
