Abstract

This paper delas with the description of the fishing grounds for pink-sshrimp along the coast of Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil), in the period 1993-1997. As pink-shrimp are considered the species Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille) and Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pérez Farfante). The main fishing grounds, in decreasing order of importance are: from the mouth of Guanabara Bay to the Marambaia Flagstone and off Cabo Frio, Ilha Grande Bay, Macaé and Ponta Negra. The major catches occur in winter and fishing effort decreases from autumn to summer. The mean annual index of abundance was 1.6 kg.h-1, being the maximum in winter (2.5 kg.h-1) and the minimum in summer (0.7 kg.h-1). The higher abundance indexes were found between Cabo Frio and Juatinga Point, with an increasing trend in a westward direction, reaching a maximum of 2.2 kg.h-1 around Juatinga Point. The pink-shrimp were caught as deep as 130 m; the higher abundance levels were from 31 to 70 m, with the maximum of 2.3 kg.h-1 in the 61 – 70 m depth zone.
