Abstract

The occupation of coastal areas in Ceará State along stretches with potential wind risk, based on a real case off the  municipality of Camocim was appraised. Methods such as digital processing of satellite images, weather data collection,  field studies and laboratory testing have been employed, using as main tool the calculations of the potential dunes forma - tion (pdf). The construction of a hotel project at this place led to the accumulation of eolian sediments previously moving,  and the techniques later used in an attempt to stem the wind flow also showed little or no effectiveness, acting more like a  wind-enhancing activity. Specific and localized approaches to stem the flow of eolian sediments, even under good stabili - zation criteria grounded in vegetative techniques, may not be effective. Therefore, the contention of action by the winds  in such area needs to cover the entire eolian system, highlighting the characteristics of the terrain, the peculiarities of the  stretches of coastline, its different potential dunes formation and their coverage ranges.
