Abstract

This scientific communication aims at contextualize the Strategic Environmental Assessment as a key tool in the process  of sustainable development, from its use in the Industrial and Port Compound of Pecém, whose implementation has brought about  outstanding impacts on the environment where it is located, namely the coastal zone of Caucaia and São Gonçalo do Amarante  counties, Ceará State, northeast Brazil. The motivation of the study lies in the need for design and knowledge of the impacts as essential  requirements for its consolidation and other relevant public policies to thew activity with a view to preserving the environment and  the local coastal culture. Thus, we intend to analyze the SEA of Pecém, based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Environment  (MMA) whose study at first starts with a survey of the actions related to environmental issues since the implementation of that  outpost which are being enforced, by confronting them with the SEA of Pecém and the MMA guidelines. From the analysis of the  observed questions, there arises the need for strategic planning development meant to to establish improving actions to improve the  environmental management ensuring the sustainability of the environment in the Port and Industrial Compound of Pecém.
