Abstract

Estuaries are areas of reproduction, feeding, growth, and protection for several fi shes and other marine species. The goal of this study was to assess the fi sh species occurring in the Curu River estuary, located 90 km west of Fortaleza, Ceará State. A qualitative fi sheries surveillance was carried out from September, 2004 to January, 2008 through sampling of fi sh caught by local artisanal fi shermen. A total of 61 species (n = 887 specimens), distributed over 47 genera and 30 families were sampled. Eighteen species are new records for the Curu River estuary, while four of these are also new records for Ceará’s estuaries. In addition, in April 2008, 20 fi shermen were interviewed regarding 42 species previously recorded for the estuary, but not sampled in the present study, bearing out their occurrence and totaling 103 species for the estuary. It is likely that the other estuaries of Ceará are underestimated regarding its ichthyofauna.
