Abstract

This paper is a fauna inventory of the elasmobranchii batoids captured by artisanal fisheries in shallow waters of Maranhão State, Brazil. The captures were accomplished in depths from 8 to 25 m with nets of the type serreira, from 500 to 1.000 fathoms of length, 4 fathoms in height and 8 cm of opposite knots, and beach drag with the nets measuring 38 m in length, 3.5 m in height, and the size of the mesh varying between 8,10 to 15.0 mm. From October, 1997 to February 2000, 279 specimens, belonging to 9 families and 11 species of rays, skates, guitarfishes and sawfishes were captured. The most abundant species proved to be Dasyatis guttata (45.88%) and Urotrygon microphthalmum (32.97%).
