Abstract

Abstract: Farol de Santa Marta (FSM) is a traditional fishing community located in the state of Santa Catarina (SC). Fishing at FSM holds significant cultural and socioeconomic importance. However, there is a glaring lack of information concerning fishing activities in the area. Hence, this study aimed to characterize the small-scale fishing activity at Farol de Santa Marta. The FSM fishing fleet was profiled through interviews with the captains of 26 vessels, utilizing the “snowball” method. As a result, it was revealed that the primary fishing gear used includes surface and bottom-set gillnets, as well as siege nets. The primary target species are the Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) and the Mullet (Mugil liza). Small boats are the most used vessels at FSM. The fishing areas explored by the fleet were bounded to the south by Passo de Torres - SC, and to the north by Florianópolis - SC. Fish is usually traded to intermediaries, and profits are distributed among FSM fishermen in shares. Despite undergoing changes over time, small-scale fishing remains the primary source of local income for the Farol de Santa Marta community, providing sustenance and livelihoods for numerous families.
