Abstract

Lutjanids represent a significant fishery resource, particularly in Northeast Brazil, where species like Lane snapper Lutjanus synagris (Linnaeus, 1758), Mutton snapper Lutjanus analis (Cuvier, 1828) and Yellowtail snapper Ocyurus chrysurus (Bloch, 1791) play a prominent role in of Ceará´s fishing production. However, there remains limited understanding of their life histories in this region, particularly regarding reproduction, age, and growth studies. Determining and continuously updating  reproductive and growth parameters is crucial, since these parameters are influenced by fishing pressure and essential for effective fisheries management. The aim of this research was to systematically review the reproduction, age, and growth parameters of these three species, offering suggestions for enhancing data estimation and pinpointing knowledge gaps in these domains. A bibliographic survey encompassing articles published in the 21st century (from 2001 to 2023) was conducted across various platforms (Periódicos CAPES, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar and Scielo) yielding. 1,883 articles. After applying exclusion criteria, 105 articles were considered for full-text analysis, covering 36 on L. synagris, 42 on L. analis, and 27 on O. chrysurus. While size at first sexual maturity (L50) values were compiled, a lack of standardization in the estimates was noted, along with the need for L50 estimation for both sexes combined. While these species have received considerable attention regarding reproductive biology, updated estimates are particularly needed for L. analis and O. chrysurus. Age and growth studies, especially in Brazil, are lacking for L. analis and O. chrysurus. In addition to compiling crucial life history parameters and identifying knowledge gaps, this study proposes enhancements in the acquisition and presentation of biological data on lutjanids.
