Abstract

Aquaculture represents an important activity for the economic and social development of the regions where it is located, although negative environmental impacts in the development model currently used lead to questions about the sustainability of this activity. This scenario encourages the creation and use of technologies that minimize environmental damage caused by their growth, such as those based on the use of microorganisms. This literature review study explores the main technologies based on the manipulation of microorganisms applied in aquaculture. The selection of articles was made from the Web of Science platform using the PRISMA protocol, with exclusion and inclusion criteria established ensuring the accuracy of the results. Information on the impact of key microorganism-based technologies on sustainability in the cultivation of aquatic species, and the diversity of microorganisms applied to them, has been summarized here.
