Resumen

The economic significance of the Serranidae family in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in subtropical areas, contrasts with their ecological role as slow-growing predators, especially those forming reproductive aggregations, leading to overfishing of many species. Despite this, most studies focus solely on the most economically important species, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of the group. This article aimed to provide an updated overview of scientific research on the Serranidae family in the Atlantic. Data was gathered data from the Scopus database using the query “TITLE-ABS-KEY (serranidae AND atlantic)” and filtered for relevant results. Our findings reveal a decline in both citation and publication rates, with a notable concentration of research in the Western Atlantic, particularly in the USA. We present an updated bibliometric analysis of scientific production, citations, country collaborations, journals and institutions related to the Serranidae family in the Atlantic. There are evident knowledge gaps concerning species within this family. The concentration of studies in specific areas raises concerns. The threats against groupers are numerous.  Hence, there's a clear imperative for further and continuous research endeavors on the Serranids.
