Abstract

Throughout his literary life, José Saramago (1922-2010) reiterated the proposition that his works are books that take a person inside: the author. In his opinion, his way of writing literature made use of what he called the “author-narrator”, thus giving up the classic figure of the narrator, his view being a point of contention with much of literary criticism. But how to perceive this authorial presence in the body of the works? What did this mode of presence, so to speak, provide the author in terms of reflection in his novels, especially considering his idea that, more than a novelist, he was first and foremost an essayist who wrote essays with characters? Here are the questions considered here.
