Abstract

In this paper, I seek to describe some of the passages and the diverse dynamics featuring one of the most common “playful events” of “traditional culture” in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, the Day of the Kings, locally known as “reisado”. The investigation is based on ethnographic research, carried out from 2016 to 2020, where I sought to understand the meanings attributed to this expression of “traditional culture”, and how such meanings have been activated locally, in regards to João Cabral, the city’s most populous neighborhood, forging it as one of the city’s “cultural cradles”, whereas at the same time it is perceived as a violent area in the urban periphery. Taking the aforementioned dynamics into account, it is possible to think of the neighborhood and “traditional culture” as constituted from intertwined multiplicities.
