Abstract

This research seeks to understand the meanings of representations about prison libraries in the speeches of those responsible for the activities in which the library is inserted, such as Youth and Adult Education and the redemption of sentences for reading, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The authors Michel Foucault, Erving Goffman, Elionaldo Fernandes Julião and Angela Davis are part of the theoretical framework. As for the methodology, the authors Ana Maria Cavalcante Lefèvre, Fernando Lefèvre, Serge Moscovici, Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. It is a research with a phenomenological logic and a qualitative approach. For data collection, a questionnaire and interview were used. The methodological instrument used for data analysis is the Collective Subject Discourse, derived from Discourse Analysis and based on the Theory of Social Representations. Finally, it analyzes the representations expressed by the interviewees. The analysis of the DSC points out that prison libraries are not yet a reality in Rio de Janeiro.
