ROLE OF VEGETATION INDUCING SEDIMENTATION IN AN ARTIFICIAL EARTH CHANNEL

Abstract

The biogeomorphic role of vegetation has been explored in different contexts with advances in the understanding of sedimentation and hydrodynamic changes in channels and riparian zones. However, it is yet to be better established regarding their role in small earth-derived canals water gullies, the development of these issues, and canal users. This study verified whether vegetation development has more prominent role as reducer of the transport of suspended sediments along the artificial channel than the natural river system, focusing on the role of vegetation as a filter of the sedimentary load. We understand that vegetation should be addressed as part of the channel management process, providing users with favorable turbidity indices and lower risks of structures breaking, as well as the formation of extenders of fluvial and riparian habitats in the rainy season.

  • Renato Emanuel Silva, Federal University of Uberlândia, Uberlândia (MG), Brazil

    PhD in Analysis, Planning and Environmental Management by the Graduate Program in Geography at the Institute of Geography at the Federal University of Uberlândia. Research focused on geomorphology, hydrogeomorphology, watershed management, natural and artificial open channels. He was a CAPES PhD Scholarship in the Sandwich modality at the University of Minho (Guimarães-Portugal). He is Professor EBTT at the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso-Campus Primavera do Leste. It is part of the Research Group "Integrated Studies in Geosciences and Geoheritage" - GPAT. professor of subjects related to the teaching of Geography. Research Methodology, Geology and Mineralogy and Advanced Mineralogy. It maintains research partnerships with members of the University of Minho in Portugal, Federal Institutes of Mato Grosso (IFMT) and Triangulo Mineiro (IFTM), with the State University of Minas Gerais, Federal University of Catalão and Federal University of Uberlândia.

    PhD in Sciences (Physical Geography) from the University of São Paulo (1998). He chaired the Union of Brazilian Geomorphology in the biennium 2005/2006. He was a member of the Advisory Committee on Physical Geography of CNPQ (CA-SA) between 2008 and 2010. Member of the Chamber of Natural Resources (CRA) with FAPEMIG between 2014 and 2016. between the years 2008 to 2011, and the second time started in 2020. He is currently a member of the editorial board of GEOUSP magazines, Revista do Departamento de Geografia (USP), Brazilian Geographical Studies. He was a member of the EOLSS International Editorial Council of UNESCO, He was on the Editorial Board of the UFU Publishing House between 2008 and 2011. He is a reviewer for the Brazilian Journal of Geomorphology, Caminhos da Geografia Magazine (UFU. Online), Environmental Earth Sciences (SPRINGER). He was secretary of the Commission On Land Degradation And Desertification of the International Association of Geography between 2010 and 2012. He is currently a Full Professor at the Institute of Geography at the Federal University of Uberlândia, working on undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as a member of the Graduate Program -Graduation in Geography from UFU (Grade 5). He has experience in Geosciences, with an emphasis on Geomorphology, working mainly on the following subjects: geomorphology, geomorphological cartography, soil erosion, integrated environmental analysis and geomorphological mapping.

  • Antonio Avelino Batista Vieira, Minho University, Minho, Portugal

    PhD in Geography from the University of Coimbra (2009), concluded with praise and distinction, unanimously, with the presentation of the dissertation "Serra de Montemuro. Geomorphological dynamics, landscape evolution and natural heritage". He has experience in the area of Geosciences, with an emphasis on Physical Geography. He is an assistant professor at the Department of Geography at the University of Minho, developing his research activities as an integrated member of the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT? UM / UC / UP). He is a member of several scientific organizations, namely the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists (APGeom), of which he has been President since 2017, of RISCOS? Portuguese Association of Risks, Prevention and Safety (Vice-President), being also a member of FUEGORED and collaborator of GRAM. During his career, he carried out research in the field of granite geomorphology, geomorphological heritage, or changes in land use, currently focusing on themes related to geographic information systems and remote sensing and their application to land use planning, glacier geomorphology and periglacial, geomorphological heritage, erosive processes following forest fires and mitigation measures, among others.
