Association between self-esteem and quality of life in elderly people with stomas

Objective: to assess and establish associations between sociodemographic and clinical variables, as well as self-esteem, and quality of life among elderly people with stomas. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted among elderly people with stomas receiving care through the Multidisciplinary Ostomy Patient Care Program, connected to a university hospital. The following questionnaires were used: sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF. Analyses included descriptive statistics, Student’s t-tests, and Pearson’s correlation tests, with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. Results: forty elderly people participated, with a mean age of 71.65 years. The majority were men, self-identified as white, married, living with a partner or family member, with an intestinal stoma resulting from gastrointestinal cancer, and reporting good self-esteem and a satisfactory quality of life. A strong correlation was observed between self-esteem and quality of life across the assessed domains. Conclusion: elderly people with lower self-esteem reported a lower quality of life in the physical, psychological, social relationships, and environmental domains. Contributions to practice: the importance of comprehensive care for elderly people with stomas is emphasized to improve their self-esteem and, consequently, their quality of life.
