Characterization of diabetic foot patients attended in an army hospital in Recife

Resumo

This research aims to characterize a profi le of diabetic foot patients attended in an army hospital in Recife, in the year 2005. It is a quantitative study, carried out by surveying all diabetic patients attended in the clinic of the mentioned hospital. The variables of interest used in the form were the following: age, sex, origin, functional situation and co-morbidities. The results found a prevalence of 3. 4% of diabetic foot patients. It was noticed a higher frequency in the age group of 60 years or more, corresponding age group, the functional situation of a reservist, in the masculine sex, originating from the city of Recife and presence of co-morbidities. The study on diabetic foot, considering as population the military, seems to be appropriate once it makes possible the comment of two distinct situations as for ways of living (active and reservist) potentially related to the occurrence of chronic illnesses.
