    Abstract

This article presents the conception of existence of Ortega y Gasset. He admits that a person’s way of living can be properly understood only in the historical horizon in which he or she is embedded. In addition to this, it will show that Ortega y Gasset, in his book Meditación de la técnica, associated the authenticity of human existence with the capability of individuals of being lost in themselves and making choices without being primarily motivated by the circumstances that affect them. It is presumed here that to understand this is essential to grasp the idea proposed by Ortega y Gasset that, subsumed to collectivity, humans beings are not authentic.
