Abstract

This article offers an interpretation of the being-for-the-other in Sartre's phenomenological ontology. From a contextual analysis of the phenomenology of the look in Being and Nothingness, we formulate the problem about the being-for-the-other as a third ecstasis. If we admit that the being-for-the-other derives from a deepening of the second ecstasis (the reflection) and, therefore, it is always conditioned by it, we run the risk of falling into the illusion of primacy of the being-for-itself. In opposition to this interpretation, we present the hypothesis that the being-for-the-other has an immediate structure, and not only a reflective one, based on Being and Nothingness and, in an auxiliary way, on The Family Idiot.
